Joe Vranich

Biography: Joseph Vranich

Working as an Executive Coach and Consultant Joe has helped business leaders with challenging transition issues as well as in providing expert location advisory services. He has written extensively on the factors that drive businesses to leave certain locations. Three previous California Governors – Pete Wilson, Gray Davis, and George Deukmejian – cited his reports while expressing their concerns about companies shifting their facilities out of California to business-friendly states.

National Recognition for Research

In 2023 Joe co-authored with Lee Ohanian, a Senior Fellow of the Hoover Institution and UCLA Professor of Economics, Why Company Headquarters Are Leaving California in Unprecedented Numbers. It describes how the state’s governance and challenges have caused more than 350 businesses to relocate their headquarters to other states between 2018 and 2021. Factors in the exodus include tax and regulatory policies; the high costs of labor, litigation, and energy; and a decline in quality of life. The report, which was highlighted in a Wall Street Journal editorial, predicts that without reforms, California will continue to lose established businesses as well as rapidly growing start-ups, some of which will become the transformational giants of tomorrow.

Joe’s earlier reports on company migrations have been quoted by the American Enterprise Institute, California Business Roundtable, California Manufacturers & Technology Association, Chapman University Center for Demographics and Policy, Small Manufacturers Association of California, and the Tax Foundation.

Executive Roles

Earlier, Joe served with The Boeing Co. and Grumman as a Public Affairs spokesperson during accidents, product disputes, plant closings, and labor strife. He served as a representative for a major real estate transaction when ownership changed on the 644-mile Boston-New York-Washington rail line. He served as CEO of the High Speed Rail Association (advocating private financing, not public subsidies), where he received the Outstanding Service award and often testified before Congress. He is also the author of three non-fiction books regarding railroad service. Toastmasters International awarded him the Advanced Communicator Gold award in recognition of his public speaking achievements.

He attended the University of Pittsburgh and Slippery Rock University, obtaining a Bachelor of Liberal Arts degree, and an Executive Development program at the UVA’s Darden Graduate School of Business.
